How can you draw a cupcake as a beginner artist? You’ll learn right here in just 5 minutes!
What You’ll Need to Draw a Cupcake
I’m not going to gatekeep drawing so you are absolutely welcome to just use what you have to draw with me <3. That includes:
But I will be drawing it digitally on my tablet using the most affordable software I know, Clip Studio Paint.
I got it because I loved that you get access to a continuously-updated vault of free natural brushes and other materials made by pros to speed up & elevate your drawing process, perfect for beginners.
And you get all of that for a lifetime just by paying once (gasp)! Trust me, those monthly membership fees add up and I want you to be happily creating cute art without breaking the bank💵🚫.
But anyways, choose your non-lethal drawing weapon and let’s get started!
How to Draw a Cupcake Step-by-Step
1. Draw the Cupcake Wrapper
So first, start with this hook-like shape on the bottom left of your page.
Then, draw a row of ‘n’ curves at the top.
So now, curve it down on the right to mirror the left wrapper.

Then, to give you a head empty step, just draw a horizontal line to enclose the bottom.
2. Draw the Cupcake & Frosting
So now, onto our cupcake! Draw a soft bracket curve on each side.
Then, start adding the frosting with one big swoop up on the left.
More swoops.
Can’t stop, won’t stop the swoops.
Then, start making the frosting curves on the right side.
Even more frosting!
Then, make the last swoop up like so.
3. Draw a Strawberry Topping
So now, gasp, a strawberry topping makes its appearance on top the final swoop. It’s just a ‘n’ curve.
Then, draw a pill shape for the strawberry leaves where the inner edge is looped.
Then, draw small curves to embed the strawberry in the frosting.
And erase the bottom edge of the leaves. But also, draw 2 triangles on the left side for the first cat ear!
Then, don’t leave out the other side.
So now, draw 2 caterpillar shapes for the strawberry’s eyes!
Then, add a semicircle for his mouth.
And 2 long ‘n’ curves angled up and out for his arms!
4. Add the Details on the Frosting & Wrapper
So now, draw a ton of lines on the wrapper for detailing.
Then, add some more lines in the frosting to make it extra swoop-y.
Finally, draw a wavy line at the bottom of the frosting to differ between the cupcake and its icing.
Yay, you’ve made it through the sketch so now let’s get coloring!
How to Make a Cupcake Drawing Colour
1. Add the Flat Colors
So first, color the frosting pink, the leaves & the wrapper green.
So now, color the strawberry red!
Then, color the inside of its ears and mouth pink.
Because a strawberry just isn’t the same without its seeds, draw small tiny pale pink, white, or yellow dots on the strawberry.
For the last flat color, add beige to the cupcake.
2. Add Shading
So now, open a multiply layer in CSP, and color it dark pink along the swoops and outer edges.
Then, airbrush a dark green swoop along the bottom right of the wrapper.
But also, the right side of each row of n’s on the wrapper.
So next, draw some small dark beige ovals on the cupcake for texture.
Then, draw a red swooping line on the bottom right side of the strawberry.
3. Shine Bright & Add Highlights
So now, color light green on the left side of the wrapper.
Finally, color white along the left of the strawberry and frosting.
Then that’s it!
